The faces of Giuseppe
Iannello
The human face is the favourite subject
of this young
artist. Using the techniques of puntasecca, acquaforte, acquatinta and
vernice molle, he realises artworks that are characterised by crossed
and
overlapping signs that define the rough representation of a face with
confused
outlines (sometimes non-existent), in which the eyes are likely to play
the primary role. Actually it is on the strength of the glance that the
artist seems to focus his attention, annihilating any environmental
connotation
and sometimes limiting the definition of the face to one single eye.
The
faces, detached from the supporting body, seem to emerge from an
anonymous
background . They stand out thanks to their dark-light contrasts and
dynamic
effects that emphasise physical concreteness and the fixity of a glance
that shows a sort of existentialist introspection. They are anonymous
faces,
nobody ‘s faces, everybody’s faces. In some sheets the overlapping of
lines
is so marked that produces a whirling effect which distorts the
subject’s
figurativeness towards the problematic limits of abstraction .
